What is the Caffeine Life?

What is the Caffeine Life? I have pondered that, and I’ll attempt to make sense of it.

We are all familiar with the Salt Life, right? From one website about it, I found this: “The Salt Life is a phrase that embodies a lifestyle focused on enjoying and immersing oneself in ocean activities and coastal living. It celebrates the connection and love people have for saltwater-related hobbies.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Well, the Caffeine Life, to me, is spiritual. It goes back to 1981 when I lived in California, and went to church in Fullerton. Most Sundays when we were coming out of the service, someone had coffee brewing, and they served it to encourage community. Fellowship, if you’re familiar with the term in church. I watched the effect it had over the 18 months I lived there.

I had made one trip to Europe before then, and I observed what coffee was like there. It was different almost everywhere I went. Smaller cups, cooler temps, and it was less of the social event and more of a drug delivery system. In the US (and Germany), it was bigger cups and served really hot, it takes about 15 minutes to consume and during that time, people talk, build relationships, go deeper with each other.

Fast-forward to 1995 when we moved to Georgia. Susan (my wife) and I started going to 12Stone Church, and we began to lobby for something similar to what we had in California. It took a while, but starting about 2001, we got to volunteer at the coffee cart and that lasted until 2007.

Then I was called into the office of one of the pastors when we were opening the new, larger, building. There was a café in the new building. However, the staff was concerned that it would not be able to handle the number of people who attended there. They wanted a free option to serve the congregation for the same Fellowship reasons. I was asked to lead a coffee team that ended up serving over 200 gallons on a Sunday morning. At one time, I led a team of 80 volunteers (40 each Sunday), and I had the title of Chaplain of Caffeine for 12Stone Church presented to me by the Executive Pastor.

That lasted all the way to Covid.

I had a quote from a book that goes, “Coffee is to the body what the Word of God is to the soul.” and while that may give coffee too much credit, it was the idea that captured me. They both quicken us, give us life and energy to do God’s work and that’s what life to me.

I named my company CaffeineLife Coaching. I believe my job is to help folks have a better life, stepping out into the world of self-employment, adventure, and to build a business they’ll be proud of that fuels the life they’ve always wanted. That’s the CaffeineLife.
